Peru is defined by extremes: coastal deserts, Andean peaks, Amazon jungle, and some of the best food in the world. Most visitors come for Machu Picchu, but the country rewards those who look beyond the postcard.
Machu Picchu logistics (2026 rules)
- Tickets must be purchased in advance — daily visitor caps are enforced. Buy 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season (June–August).
- Entry is in timed circuits — you choose a circuit and time slot. The classic circuit takes 2–3 hours.
- Getting there: Train from Cusco/Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes ($50–90 each way), then bus up to the ruins ($12 each way). Or: hike the Inca Trail (4 days, requires a guide, book 4–6 months ahead).
- Total cost for Machu Picchu day trip: $120–200 per person (ticket + train + bus).
Beyond Machu Picchu
Cusco (2–3 days): Beautiful colonial city at 3,400m altitude. Arrive 2 days early to acclimatize. San Pedro market, Sacsayhuamán, free walking tours.
Sacred Valley (1–2 days): Ollantaytambo, Moray, salt mines. A shared taxi or colectivo costs $2–5 between towns.
Lima (2–3 days): One of the world’s best food cities. Ceviche at a market: $5. Tasting menu at a world-ranked restaurant: $80–120.
Rainbow Mountain: A day trip from Cusco. Stunning at 5,200m altitude, but check weather and fitness level.
