Sofia is compact and walkable

The mountains are 30 minutes from the capital
Vitosha Mountain is essentially Sofia’s backyard — a cable car and hiking trails are reachable by city bus, unusual for a European capital.
Plovdiv rivals Sofia for charm
One of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a beautifully preserved old town — a very doable day trip or overnight from Sofia.
EU member, not yet Eurozone
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev, not the Euro — a source of some of its lower relative prices compared to Eurozone neighbors.
Black Sea coast is a separate summer trip
Varna and Burgas on the coast are a different pace entirely — worth a dedicated few days if visiting June-August.
Best time to visit
May-June and September offer the best balance: mild weather, green mountains, and thinner crowds than peak summer. July-August is when the Black Sea coast comes alive but Sofia can get uncomfortably hot. Winter brings genuinely good, affordable skiing at Bansko and Borovets — a fraction of Alpine resort prices.
Getting there
Sofia Airport (SOF) has direct or one-stop connections from most European hubs and several Middle Eastern cities, with budget-carrier fares regularly appearing well under $100 one-way from regional origins.
Getting around
Sofia metro and trams: Cheap, clean, and cover the city well. Intercity buses/trains: Connect Sofia to Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas affordably, though buses are generally faster than trains. Rental car: Useful for exploring the Rila Monastery region or the mountains beyond what public transport easily reaches.
Where to stay
Budget ($12-25/night): Hostels and guesthouses in central Sofia. Mid-range ($30-60/night): Boutique hotels near Vitosha Boulevard. Splurge ($80-160/night): Design hotels that would cost multiples more in comparable Western European capitals.
