What to know before you go
Most nationalities need an ETA (electronic travel authorization) applied for online before arrival — it’s straightforward but don’t leave it to the airport. The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee; cards work in cities and tourist areas, cash is still king elsewhere.
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon systems affecting different coasts at different times — broadly, December-March is best for the south/west coast and hill country, while April-September favors the east coast. Plan your route around which coast matters more to your trip.
Getting there
Colombo’s Bandaranaike Airport is the main gateway, with good connections from the Middle East, India, and increasingly direct routes from Europe.
Getting around
The train from Kandy to Ella through tea country is one of the most scenic rail journeys anywhere and genuinely worth building an itinerary around. Elsewhere, hired drivers are common and affordable for covering ground efficiently.
Where to stay
Kandy or Nuwara Eliya for tea country, Ella for hiking and views, Galle or Mirissa for the south coast beach stretch, Colombo only needs a night as a transit base.

Culture & Etiquette
Sri Lanka blends Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities — modest dress and shoe/hat removal are required at Buddhist temples, and pointing your feet toward a Buddha statue is considered disrespectful. A head wobble (side to side) generally signals agreement, similar to parts of South India, and can look ambiguous to first-time visitors.

Bank ATMs (Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath) in Colombo and Kandy are reliable and give fair rates. Licensed exchange bureaus in Colombo’s Fort area and at the airport are competitive; always count cash before leaving the counter and avoid unlicensed street changers.
