Getting there

Athens (ATH) is the main international gateway with direct flights from across Europe, the Middle East, and several North American and Asian hubs. In peak summer, some islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes) also get direct seasonal international flights, which can save a ferry connection.

Getting around

Ferries: The main way to island-hop — slow ferries are cheaper, high-speed catamarans cost more but save hours. Domestic flights: Worth it for longer hops (Athens to Crete or Rhodes) if time matters more than money. Athens metro: Clean, cheap, and covers the main sites and airport connection. Rental car: Genuinely useful on larger islands (Crete, Naxos) to reach beaches and villages buses don’t cover.
