Qatar Travel Guide 2026
Doha’s ultra-modern skyline, desert safaris, and a genuinely easy long-haul stopover destination.
Search flightsWhy Qatar
Qatar built an entire ultra-modern city in Doha within a generation, and it shows — striking architecture, world-class museums (the Museum of Islamic Art alone is worth a dedicated visit), and some of the best airport infrastructure anywhere, making it a genuinely pleasant long-haul stopover rather than just a layover to endure.
What to know before you go
Most Western passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Qatar is a conservative Gulf state — modest dress is expected in public areas, and alcohol is available only in licensed hotels and restaurants, not generally.
Best time to visit
November-March is by far the most comfortable window — the rest of the year gets extremely hot, often exceeding 40°C in summer, which makes outdoor activities (desert safaris, the Corniche) genuinely uncomfortable.
Getting there
Hamad International Airport is a major global hub, especially for connections between Europe/US and Asia/Oceania — a stopover of a few days is easy to build into a longer trip.
Getting around
Doha’s metro is modern, clean, and covers most tourist areas well. Ride-hailing apps work smoothly for anything the metro doesn’t reach.
Where to stay
West Bay for modern skyline views and easy metro access, Souq Waqif area for a more traditional atmosphere within walking distance of the old market and Corniche.
eSIM & connectivity
Coverage is excellent throughout Doha and most of the country given its small, highly developed footprint.
Travel insurance for Qatar
Standard coverage works well; if a desert safari or dune-bashing excursion is part of the plan, confirm your policy covers off-road adventure activities.

Culture & Etiquette
Qatar is a conservative Muslim country — modest dress is expected in public (shoulders and knees covered), stricter still at mosques and government buildings. Alcohol is available only in licensed hotel venues. Public displays of affection are best kept minimal. Friday is the main day of prayer/rest.
Currency & Exchanging Money
Currency: Qatari Riyal (QAR)
QAR is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate, making conversions easy to sanity-check. Licensed exchange houses in Doha’s malls (City Center, Villaggio) generally offer fair, competitive rates; bank ATMs are reliable and widespread throughout the city.

Electricity & Adapters
Voltage: 240V, 50Hz
Plug type: G (UK-style 3-pin rectangular)
If your home plug type doesn’t match, bring a universal travel adapter — it’s the one item worth packing regardless of destination.
