Lisbon vs Porto: Which Should You Visit First?

Both cities are exceptional. Both are affordable. Both have incredible food and wine. But they’re genuinely different experiences, and if you only have time for one, here’s how to choose.
Lisbon: the cosmopolitan one
Bigger, more diverse, more nightlife. Seven hills with viewpoints (miradouros) everywhere. A mix of historic trams, modern food halls, and street art. More international, more options, more energy. The Alfama neighborhood is medieval and magical. Belém has the monasteries and pastéis de nata. Bairro Alto has the bars.
Porto: the soulful one
Smaller, more intimate, arguably more beautiful. The Douro River with its rabelo boats, the São Bento train station with 20,000 blue tiles, the Ribeira waterfront. Porto is port wine country — the lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia offer tastings from $5. The food scene is more traditional, the people are warmer, and the pace is slower.
