Car Rental Tips That Actually Save You Money

Rental car companies make most of their profit not from the rental itself but from the extras: insurance, fuel, upgrades, GPS, child seats. Here’s how to avoid overpaying.

1. Skip the counter insurance (usually)

The collision damage waiver (CDW) at the counter costs $15–30/day. Your credit card or travel insurance may already cover this. Check before you arrive. If you need standalone rental car insurance, buy it from a third party for $5–8/day.

2. Off-airport locations are cheaper

Airport rental desks pay concession fees to the airport, and they pass that cost to you (10–30% surcharge). A rental office 5 minutes away by shuttle is often significantly cheaper for the same car.

3. Always photograph the car

Before driving off: photograph every panel, every scratch, every dent. Include the odometer reading. Email the photos to yourself with a timestamp. This takes 3 minutes and can save you hundreds in disputed damage claims.

4. The fuel policy matters

Full-to-full: Best option. Pick up full, return full. You control where you refuel.

Full-to-empty: Worst option. You pay inflated per-liter rates for a “pre-paid” tank.

Always refuel at a gas station near the airport before returning — the last-mile premium is real but still cheaper than the rental company’s refuel charge.

5. When to skip the rental entirely

If you’re staying in one city, or if public transport is excellent (Japan, most of Western Europe), a rental car adds cost, parking stress, and driving anxiety. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, or Tokyo, a car is a liability, not an asset.
