Using your home SIM in Turkey on roaming can get expensive, and a local SIM comes with a rule many tourists have never heard of: Turkey registers foreign phones by their IMEI number. The 120-day rule
As summarised by Simology and Turkey Travel Planner: a foreign phone can be used in Turkey for up to 120 days, on roaming or with a Turkish SIM, without registering it. If you use a Turkish SIM for longer, the phone can be blocked from Turkish networks unless it is registered, which sources say costs a one-off fee of several thousand lira at a PTT office. The exact amount changes, so check it if you plan a long stay.
For a normal holiday of a week or two, you will never get near this limit.

Why an eSIM is usually easiest
- You buy and install it before the trip, so you have data at the airport for maps and ride apps.
- It is a separate profile, so your normal number stays active for calls and SMS on your main SIM.
- For a short holiday you do not deal with the IMEI process.
One thing to know: guides report that Turkey’s regulator has applied registration rules to foreign eSIM providers whose plans use Turkish networks. In practice, reputable providers handle this for you. If your plan stops working, contact the provider first.
How to choose a plan
- Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be network-unlocked.
- Count your days and data. Maps, messaging and photos are light. Streaming and hotspotting are not.
- Look at the network. The plan should run on a major Turkish operator for good coverage outside Istanbul, Antalya and the main tourist areas.
- Read the refund and top-up terms before paying.
