7 Hotel Booking Mistakes That Cost You Money
Travellagio · 5 min read
Most people book the first decent-looking hotel they find and overpay by 20–40%. Here are the mistakes that cost the most and how to avoid them.
1. Booking the first price you see
The same room on the same night can be priced differently on Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, and the hotel’s own site. The difference is often $10–40/night. Always compare.
2. Ignoring the total price
“$89/night” can become $115/night after city tax, resort fee, and service charge. Always check the final checkout price before comparing.
3. Choosing “city center” without checking the map
“City center” is a marketing label, not a precise location. A hotel labeled “city center” could be a 30-minute walk from where you actually want to be. Always check the map view.
4. Always booking refundable
Refundable rates are typically 10–20% more expensive. Once your dates are firm, switch to non-refundable and pocket the savings.
5. Not checking the hotel’s own website
Many hotels offer a “best price guarantee” on their direct site, and some include breakfast or upgrades that OTAs don’t. Always check both.
6. Booking too early OR too late
The sweet spot for most destinations is 3–6 weeks before arrival. Too early and you miss late deals; too late and selection shrinks and prices spike.
7. Ignoring guest photos
Professional hotel photos are styled, lit, and shot with wide-angle lenses. Guest photos on Google Maps and TripAdvisor show the real room. Always check both.
