How to Make the Most of a Long Layover
Travellagio · 5 min read
A 6-hour layover can feel like purgatory or a free mini-trip. Here’s how to turn it into the latter.
Should you leave the airport?
Yes if: layover is 5+ hours, the city is accessible (under 30 min by train), you don’t need a visa for transit, and you can re-clear security in time.
Best airports for leaving: Singapore (city in 25 min), Amsterdam (15 min by train), Munich (S-Bahn to center), Doha (free city tours offered by Qatar Airways), Istanbul (tram to old city in 40 min).
If you’re staying in the airport
- Lounge access: Day passes cost $30–50 and include food, drinks, Wi-Fi, showers, and comfortable seating. Worth it for 4+ hour layovers. Priority Pass gives access to 1,300+ lounges worldwide.
- Sleep pods/transit hotels: Many airports have hourly sleep pods ($10–20/hour) or transit hotels bookable by the hour. Singapore Changi, Dubai, Doha, and Istanbul are excellent for this.
- Free Wi-Fi: Most major airports offer free Wi-Fi (some time-limited). An eSIM with data is more reliable for long layovers.
Essential layover rules
- Know if you need a transit visa. US, UK, and some other passport holders can transit most countries visa-free, but there are exceptions (China, Russia).
- Keep your boarding pass and passport accessible. You’ll go through security again.
- Set multiple alarms. Missing a connecting flight because you fell asleep is more common than you think.
