How to File a Travel Insurance Claim
Travellagio · 5 min read
Buying travel insurance is easy. Getting paid on a claim is where most people hit problems — usually because they didn’t document things properly in the moment. Here’s how to avoid that.
Step 1: Document everything in real time
- Medical: Get itemized receipts from every doctor, hospital, and pharmacy. Keep originals.
- Theft: File a police report within 24 hours. Get a copy with a case number. No police report = no claim.
- Flight cancellation/delay: Get written confirmation from the airline stating the reason and duration of the delay.
- Lost baggage: File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport before leaving.
Step 2: Notify your insurer ASAP
Most policies require notification within 24–72 hours of an incident. Some have a 24/7 emergency line for medical issues. Call them — even if you’re not sure you’ll claim. Early notification strengthens your case.
Step 3: Submit the claim
Most insurers have an online portal. You’ll need: completed claim form, copies of all receipts and reports, proof of travel (boarding pass, hotel booking), and your policy number.
Common reasons claims get denied
- Activity wasn’t covered (adventure sports without add-on)
- Pre-existing condition not disclosed
- No police report for theft
- Claim filed too late
- Alcohol involvement
