The Japan Rail Pass used to be a near-automatic purchase. Since the big price rise in 2023 and another increase on 1 October 2026, it is a calculation you have to do. Here are the current prices and a simple way to decide, checked in October 2026.
Current prices
According to Self Guide Japan, the prices for passes bought through JR-designated overseas travel agencies changed on 1 October 2026:

The same source reports that no increase has been published for the official Japan Rail Pass website. Check the official site for the price on the day you buy, because this can change.
When the pass is worth it
Several guides, including this one, agree on the logic:
- A single Tokyo to Kyoto round trip on the Shinkansen does not cover the cost of a 7-day pass.
- A rough break-even for the 7-day pass is about a Tokyo to Hiroshima round trip within the seven days.
- The pass pays off when you chain several long-distance JR legs: for example Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and day trips, or a route reaching Kyushu or Hokkaido.
How to decide in five minutes
- List every long-distance JR trip you plan, with the date.
- Look up the fare of each leg on a route planner such as Jorudan or Navitime (they show the Shinkansen fare).
- Add them up. If the total is clearly above the pass price, and the trips fall inside the pass window, the pass is worth it.
- If it is close, skip the pass. Individual tickets give you flexibility, and you can pay with a rechargeable IC card for local trains.
Remember what the pass does not cover: some Shinkansen services have restrictions, and most subways and private railways are not included. Check the exclusions before you buy.
Cheaper alternatives
