When Is the Cheapest Time to Fly to Japan in 2026?

The difference between the most expensive and cheapest month to fly to Japan can be $400–800+ per ticket. Timing your trip around fare cycles — rather than just school holidays and cherry blossoms — is the single biggest way to cut your flight cost.
The short answer
January (after New Year), late February, early June, September, and early December are consistently the cheapest windows to fly to Japan from North America and Europe. These are the shoulder periods between Japan’s peak tourism seasons.
Month-by-month breakdown
January – February
Cheapest period of the year. After the New Year holiday rush, demand drops sharply. January fares from the US West Coast to Tokyo can be $450–650 round-trip, compared to $900–1,200 in peak cherry blossom season. Late February is excellent: cold but clear skies, and plum blossom season begins in southern Japan.
March – April
Peak season. Most expensive. Cherry blossom season (late March through mid-April) draws millions of visitors. Fares spike, hotels fill months in advance, and popular spots like Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path are shoulder-to-shoulder. Beautiful, yes. Cheap, no.
May
Moderate. Golden Week (April 29–May 5) is Japan’s biggest domestic holiday — domestic flights are packed and internal prices spike. After Golden Week, however, the rest of May is pleasant, warm, and relatively affordable.
June
Very affordable. Early June, before the rainy season (tsuyu) hits most of Japan around mid-June, is one of the best value windows. Hydrangea season is gorgeous, crowds are thin, and fares drop. Late June is rainy but even cheaper.
July – August
High season. Summer holidays worldwide push fares up. Japan is also hot and humid (30–35°C in most areas). Hokkaido is an exception — pleasant summer weather and slightly lower demand. Festivals (matsuri) are a highlight if you can handle the heat and prices.
September
Excellent value. Summer crowds leave, typhoon season creates a small risk but mostly affects southern islands, and fares drop significantly. Late September sees early autumn colors in Hokkaido and northern Honshu. One of the best price-to-experience ratios of the year.
October – November
Peak again. Autumn foliage (koyo) is Japan’s other major draw. Not as expensive as cherry blossom season, but noticeably above average. Peak colors move from north to south through October and November.
December
Split. Early December (before the 15th) is cheap — autumn colors are fading, winter hasn’t hit, and few people travel. The last two weeks spike due to Christmas/New Year holiday travel.
Booking tips
- Book 8–14 weeks before departure for the best fare window on most routes to Japan.
- Compare open-jaw tickets (fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka) — often barely more than a round-trip, and saves you a $60–80 Shinkansen ride back.
- Set a price alert instead of checking daily. Fares fluctuate over weeks before trending in one direction.
- Midweek departures (Tuesday–Thursday) are consistently $50–100 cheaper than weekend departures on US/Europe to Japan routes.
