How to Get From Tirana to the Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera — the stretch of coast from Vlora south to Saranda — has some of the most beautiful (and still uncrowded) beaches in the Mediterranean. The catch: getting there from Tirana takes some planning. The drive is 4–7 hours depending on your destination, and the route includes one of Europe’s most scenic (and winding) coastal roads.

Your four options

1. Bus (cheapest)

Cost: $6–12 one way
Time: 5–7 hours to Saranda, 4–5 hours to Himara
Frequency: Several daily departures from Tirana’s South Bus Station (Terminali i Jugut)

Buses to Saranda leave in the morning (typically 6:00–8:00 AM) and again in the early afternoon. Some pass through the coastal towns (Himara, Dhermi) while others take the faster inland route via Gjirokastra. Ask before boarding which route your bus takes — if you want the Riviera coast, you need the coastal route, not the Gjirokastra highway.

Tip: Buy your ticket the day before at the station. Seats fill up in July and August. There’s no reliable online booking for Albanian intercity buses yet.

2. Rental car (most flexible)

Cost: $25–45/day for a compact car
Time: 4–6 hours driving
Best for: stopping at beaches along the way, accessing hidden coves

The SH8 coastal road from Vlora to Saranda is one of Europe’s great drives: hairpin turns above turquoise water, abandoned bunkers on hilltops, and beaches you can only reach by car. It’s also narrow, steep, and unforgiving of bad driving.

Important:

Get a car with decent clearance — the road to some beaches (Gjipe, Llamani) is unpaved.
Drive during daylight. The coastal road has no street lights and steep drop-offs.
Fuel up in Vlora. Gas stations on the Riviera are sparse.
Albanian driving style is… assertive. Stay defensive, honk on blind corners.

3. Private transfer (easiest)

Cost: $80–140 per vehicle (not per person)
Time: 4–5 hours
Best for: arriving late, traveling with luggage, groups of 2–4

A pre-booked transfer is the stress-free option. A driver picks you up at Tirana airport or your hotel and drives you directly to your Riviera accommodation. Split between 3–4 people, the per-person cost is comparable to a bus ticket.

4. Fly to Corfu + ferry (alternative route)

Cost: $60–120 flight to Corfu + $10–15 ferry Corfu→Saranda
Time: 2–3 hours total travel
Best for: those starting from a European city with cheap Corfu flights

If you’re coming from Western Europe, a budget flight to Corfu (Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet serve it) plus a 30-minute ferry to Saranda can be faster and sometimes cheaper than flying to Tirana. The Corfu–Saranda ferry runs multiple times daily in summer.
